Lot 394 1803 S-251 R-2 VF35
1803 S-251 R-2 VF35Ten points sharper but there is a short, dull scratch near the rim left of the lower curls, a tiny nick on the cheek, and a couple more near the dentils off the end of the nose. The reverse is flawless. Glossy light chocolate brown and tan. The lighter color dominates the obverse while chocolate covers most of the reverse. The toning is uneven and that does affect the eye appeal, but there is no trace of roughness on this cent. E-MDS, Breen state II, with clashmarks but no cracks on the reverse. Comes with a great provenance.Certificate Number: Pedigree: Ex Howard R. Newcomb-George H. Clapp-ANS Museum Collection (part of the legal settlement with Naftzger for cents reportedly switched out by Dr. Sheldon decades earlier) 2001-R. E. "Ted" Naftzger, Jr. (via William C. Noyes)-Fred H. Borcherdt Collection
